Politically Incorrect
I have to admit that I got really frustrated today. As I was walking through a mall today in the San Francisco Bay Area - waving and saying "Merry Christmas" - a man tugged on my sleeve and literally pulled me to the side. Of course, I knew who he was immediately. And I instantly recalled the first day he went on the naughty list at the age of 8. He hasn't been off that list since. I also knew exactly what was coming... a lecture. Let's just call him Bill for the purposes of this post as I don't want to reveal his real name. But Bill is that kind of guy - and we all know one - that thinks he is better than everyone else. Superior. You know the type... they are the ones that always have a condescending tone in their voice as they explain how they might do something different. They don't directly address their concern with you but they make their point in a not-so-subtle manner.
So Bill literally pulls me aside. My security team immediately pops out of the shadows and quickly surrounds Bill. I wave them aside. Bill is annoying but he is not a threat. He steps up to me and says, "My name is Bill. It's my pleasure to meet you. What is your name?"
"Santa", I say.
Bill rolls his eyes and chuckles. "No. I mean your real name." He stopped believing when he was 7 years old. What a shame. Who knows how different his life might be if he still believed in the magic of the Christmas Spirit and all of the possibilities this world offers? But he doesn't. He has it all figured out in his own mind. There is no need and no time for wonder.
"Really... I am Santa Claus. But I know you don't believe, Bill. Its ironic that your parents, William Sr. and Angela, both believed their entire lives. Usually the parents stop believing and the kids keep the hope alive... at least for a few years." As I said his parent's names, I saw a brief look of surprise but it quickly disappeared.
Bill turned red. But he quickly controlled his voice and spoke with an obviously forced calm. "Ok then... Santa... I just wanted to let you know that all of us may not celebrate Christmas. If I were playing Santa Claus at the mall, I would say 'Happy Holidays' so as not to offend anyone. Have you considered that option or, perhaps, other alternatives to 'Merry Christmas'?"
"Yes. I have thought seriously about 'Happy Christmas'," I stated confidently.
Bill was obviously flustered. "That's not politically correct. I would think the real Santa, if there were one, would not want to offend anyone."
"Bill, Santa does not want to offend anyone. But Santa celebrates Christmas... not a generic holiday. Santa respects your beliefs... I request you respect mine."
Bill let out an arrogant huff, spun on one foot, and marched off towards the food court. I continued on down the corridor toward the line of kids that were now awaiting me.
I get this every year. And quite candidly, I am growing tired of it. I celebrate Christmas. CHRISTmas. Not a generic, secular holiday. As I told Bill, I respect that others may celebrate different holidays. I don't get upset if someone tells me Happy Hanukkah or Happy Kwanzaa or Happy Diwali. I don't celebrate those holidays because they don't fit in my religious belief system but I am not offended because someone else does. Tolerance is not about being anti-religious or secular... it is about truly experiencing, practicing, and protecting religious freedom. That means I have the right to celebrate Christmas. I put up a Christmas tree, not a Holiday tree. I send Christmas cards, not Holiday cards. I say "Merry Christmas", not "Happy Holidays"... ok, sometimes I say "Happy Holidays" but not because I feel forced to do so. I sing Christmas carols, not Holiday songs.
And to be clear, I may not agree with your beliefs, but I will be the first to stand up to protect your right to have your own religious beliefs. I expect the same from you in return.
So politically correct or not, you can expect to hear me saying "Ho, Ho, Ho! Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night! Ho, Ho, Ho!" for many years to come.

Way to go, Santa! I have made that speech almost word for word every year myself. Respecting other religions doesn't mean giving up your own. : )
Praise the Lord for keeping CHRIST in CHRISTmas!

I totally agree with you on that one! I celebrate christmas because its a special day and its about Jesus' birth! I Believe in you! My parents don't, gran doesnt, cousins don't! So I dont know why they dont! Well God bless you. You can still come to my house. Love ruzenka xx.
Wishing you a very HappyChristmas and Newyear!!
Good for you to stand up to Bill like that, Santa.
We grew up celebrating Christmas in our house. For the last fifteen years, I have practiced Wicca and celebrate Yule, but that does not prevent me from respecting my friends' and family's beliefs.
Maybe because my beliefs are less... mainstream... and are often subject to criticism and ridicule, I believe in tolerance and respect for everyone. I don't get upset when someone wishes me a Merry Christmas, as it is a sincere wish for goodwill and happiness, and who would object to that?
Here's to you, Santa! And, Merry Christmas! :)
Thank you, Santa Claus... I believe in You and I am so glad you stood up for Christmas!!! It is all about the birth of Jesus and it is what Santa celebrates! God bless you and a very Merry Christmas to you and everyone at the North Pole!

Ah Santa ~ I remember so well the year you visited the Jewish boy across the street because he was sick and unable to get out and have any holiday fun. You wished him Happy Hanukkah and told him you love all children. His mom told me later, you were the hit of his holiday season! The Spirit of Light and Hope, Peace and Love that permeates All spirituality at this season is more important to impart to each other than any argument over the words we use to convey that Spirit. ~ blessings
question those who seek to be offended, why would they choose that experience? for what purpose? to silence whom?
additionally, what then does Bill demand of proper greetings throughout the year and even day to day? how about the telephone? what about in letter form?
it must be assumed that Bill demands that a greeting isn't just any greeting, so saying, "good morning" is likely not proper or suitable.
Bill needs to get a life, step out of his victimization and ask Santa for a new brain that doesn't have "entitlement" stamped all over it.
A greeting is a greeting is a greeting.
I care not if a person wishes me Merry Christmas, Season's Greetings, Happy Holidays, Happy Qwanza, Happy Ramadan, Happy Hanukkah or simply, good morning.
The only reason a person demands a specific greeting at the holidays is because they think they own the holiday, they own its meaning.
Well, that's not about America and about freedom, that's about control of others - what they think and how they think; infringing on the conscious mind of another. Is there a worse attempt to elevate the self of thinking you're better than others than to think you know how a life should be lived? What choices an individual should make? A greater insult to humanity?
It is self-righteousness that says, I know what is best for me and therefore it is best for everyone.
Freedom knows no such thing.
Here in the great U.S. you can celebrate as you wish, define it as you wish, live your life in freedom in so long as your choices don't infringe on the free choices of others to do the same for themselves.
BTW - Merry Christmas, Santa! :)
You are right on. Thank you for saying it out loud! There are so many people who think that "tolerance" means denying your own beliefs so as not to be "offensive." I think our world today has no clue what tolerance actually means!
p.s. Thought I'd put in a word for them-- my kids have been really good this year! :)
Merry Christmas!
Well said! I agree with you.
Although I am a non-Christian, I love to see the good that the spirit of Christmas and a belief in Christ can produce. It never offends me to be wished "Merry Christmas." While there will always be a few Billys loudly speaking up for political correctness, there are millions more of us who are just fine with well-wishes, regardless of the denomination. Being Santa, I'm sure you know this.
Few of us are so fragile as to be wounded by a "Merry Christmas", just as few Christians are wounded by a more inclusive greeting. In my opinion, it's the intent, not the words themselves that really matters. So, please be patient with Billy and his kind, and please accept my very sincere Merry Christmas.
Way to go, Santa! Merry Christmas to you and all at the North Pole.
Do you know - I was talking about this very same issue with a friend last night and I completely agree. I am very pleased to be wished a Happy Hannukah or Merry Diwali and will always accept the sentiment in the way it is meant - to wish me joy. But do not let anyone say that I cannot say Merry Christmas!! :-) Politcal correctness does go too far sometimes.
I too do not align myself with Christianity, as I lean more towards Buddhist thought, but I totally agree with you Santa Claus. If nothing else, Christmas is a traditional, cultural holiday celebrating the birth of a great man who is important to not only roughly 2 billion people but countless others around the world who love his teachings and philosophy. The holiday is all about the kind of love that the Bible portrays through the actions and teachings of Jesus, and I believe that that kind of love and joy are universal, to all people, religious or not. Good work, Santa. Keep it up!!
You brought a tear to my eye, just stand tall and tell it like it is!
A great message.
Merry Christmas Santa, and I hope the same for everyone out there.

Amen, Santa!
MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYONE!
Merry Christmas Santa..!
nice post. thanks.
I think some people do need to get a life and stop "picking" about how to greet someone at Christmas. The greeting comes from the heart and that's what counts. Sometimes when I say "Happy Holiday" I'm also thinking of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year...all of the holidays that are so close together. I will never stop saying "Merry Christmas" to someone no matter who does or does not like it! If the greeting comes from the heart why would you be offended by it? I just don't get some people. Christmas is my favorite holiday, a magical time of the year, so Merry Christmas to you Santa and all of your family.
